Choice Privileges

Choice Hotels' loyalty program, covering 7,500+ properties across budget and midscale US brands. The standout feature is inbound transfers from Amex Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou Points at 1:1 — rare for a budget hotel program — which opens up Cambria and Ascend Collection properties as occasional aspirational redemptions.

Is Choice Privileges Worth Building?

Choice Privileges is the right program for two types of travelers: frequent Choice Hotel guests who stay at Comfort Inn, Sleep Inn, or Quality Inn for work or road trips, and Amex Membership Rewards or Citi ThankYou cardholders who want a hotel transfer option that isn't Marriott or Hilton.

For everyone else, the program's base point value of 0.6–0.8 cents per point makes it hard to justify as a primary focus. Budget brands earn well, but the redemption ceiling is low — and the most interesting redemptions (Cambria Hotels, upscale Ascend Collection properties) require transferring in points from Amex or Citi rather than earning them organically.

That transfer angle is real. Choice Privileges is one of only a handful of hotel programs that accepts both Amex MR and Citi TY transfers at 1:1. For travelers who accumulate those currencies and occasionally want a hotel transfer that isn't Hyatt or Marriott, it's a legitimate option — but only when the math works out on a specific property.

How to Earn Choice Privileges Points

Hotel Stays

Base earning depends on the brand. Most Choice properties earn 10 points per $1 spent on eligible hotel charges. Economy and extended-stay brands — Econo Lodge, Rodeway Inn, WoodSpring Suites, and Suburban Extended Stay — earn 5 points per $1. Check the brand before assuming full earning, especially for extended-stay reservations.

The full brand roster at 10 pts/$1: Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality Inn, Sleep Inn, Clarion, Clarion Pointe, MainStay Suites (standard-tier rates), Cambria Hotels, and Ascend Hotel Collection. Radisson Hotels Americas brands (Radisson, Radisson Blu, Country Inn & Suites) joined the program following the 2024 acquisition.

Elite tier bonuses stack on top: Gold adds 10%, Platinum adds 25%, Diamond adds 50%. A Diamond member paying $150/night at a Comfort Inn earns 225 base points × 1.5 = 337 points — equivalent to roughly $2 at average redemption value.

Credit Cards

The Barclays Choice Privileges Mastercard earns 5 pts/$1 at Choice Hotels, 3 pts/$1 on gas, phone, and utilities, and 1 pt/$1 everywhere else. It's the standard co-brand card for Choice loyalists, with an annual fee and sign-up bonus that can cover several free nights at budget properties.

If you carry an Amex card or Citi ThankYou card as your primary spend card, you don't need the Barclays card to accumulate Choice points — the transfer partnerships make your existing points available when you need them.

Transferring Amex MR or Citi TY Points

Both Amex Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou Points transfer to Choice Privileges at 1:1. This is the program's most interesting feature for anyone who doesn't stay at Choice Hotels regularly.

Transfer only with a specific booking in mind. At 0.6–0.8 cpp base value, Choice Privileges points are generally worth less than what Amex MR or Citi TY can do elsewhere — including World of Hyatt, airline partners, or Citi's own portal. Transfer when you've confirmed a Cambria or Ascend property where the math clears 1.0 cpp or better.

Elite Status

Choice Privileges has three status tiers — Gold (10 nights), Platinum (40 nights), and Diamond (60 nights). The thresholds are manageable for frequent Choice guests but the benefits are modest compared to hotel programs like World of Hyatt or Hilton Honors.

Diamond's 50% bonus earning is the most tangible benefit. At 10 pts/$1 base and a 50% tier bonus, Diamond members earn 15 pts/$1 — which still averages only $0.09–$0.12 per dollar spent at 0.6–0.8 cpp. Elite status makes the most financial sense for travelers already staying 40–60 nights annually at Choice brands, not as something to engineer around.

Complimentary upgrades at Diamond are subject to availability and vary by property. Do not expect consistent upgrade delivery at economy or midscale brands — these are not full-service hotels with robust inventory.

Award Pricing: Fixed Tiers 1–10

Choice Privileges uses a fixed-tier pricing structure. Each property is assigned to a tier from 1 to 10, and free nights cost a set number of points within that tier. Tier 1 properties start at 6,000 points per night. Tier 10 properties — which include Cambria Hotels in prime urban markets — can run 35,000 points or more per night.

Fixed pricing is a genuine advantage: you know what a property costs before you search, and the price doesn't change with cash demand. The downside is that 6,000–8,000 point nights (Tiers 1–2) are mostly economy properties, and the real-dollar cash rates at those properties are often $60–$90 — meaning your points are worth less per redemption than the program's headline tiers suggest.

Sweet Spots

Cambria Hotels in Urban Markets

Cambria is Choice's upscale brand — modern hotels in dense urban markets like New York, Chicago, Nashville, and Denver. Cash rates frequently reach $200–$400 per night, while point redemptions typically land between 15,000–25,000 points. At those rates and point costs, you can achieve 1.0–1.5 cpp — meaningfully above the program average.

This is the primary reason to consider transferring Amex MR or Citi TY points to Choice Privileges. A 25,000-point night at a Cambria in midtown Manhattan where the cash rate is $300 is a solid 1.2 cpp redemption. Not exceptional by Hyatt standards, but defensible.

Ascend Hotel Collection Properties

Ascend is Choice's boutique/independent collection — historic properties, unique stays, and independents that have joined the Choice network. Award pricing varies; some Ascend properties price at mid-tier levels (10,000–20,000 points) while offering cash rates of $180–$280 per night. Verify the specific property's tier before transferring points.

Ascend availability can be inconsistent. Ascend properties are independently operated. Award inventory and earned points recognition are not guaranteed to match what you'd expect at a corporate Choice brand. Call the property directly to confirm redemption availability before transferring points.

Where It Disappoints

Choice Privileges is a budget-to-midscale program, and that shapes every aspect of the redemption experience. At economy brands — Econo Lodge, Rodeway Inn, WoodSpring Suites — you're earning half the standard rate (5 pts/$1) and redeeming at properties where cash rates are often low enough to make paying cash the smarter move.

The point value ceiling is real. Even at Cambria properties, achieving 1.5+ cpp requires finding the right property at the right time. The program has no airline partners, no luxury hotel equivalent of Hyatt's Park Hyatt or Hilton's Conrad, and no meaningful status pathway that delivers guaranteed premium benefits.

If you're an Amex or Citi cardholder evaluating hotel transfer partners, run the numbers on your specific target first. World of Hyatt at 1:1 from Chase (or Amex via Hyatt's Amex partnership) delivers higher average point value for most US luxury redemptions. Choice Privileges is the better transfer when Hyatt has no property in your destination and a Cambria or Ascend option exists.

Bottom Line

Choice Privileges is a solid program for one specific traveler: someone who sleeps at Comfort Inn or Quality Inn frequently enough to earn meaningful points, or a savvy Amex/Citi cardholder who has identified a specific Cambria or Ascend property where the transfer math works. For anyone else, the 0.6–0.8 cpp baseline makes it a second-tier option in a competitive hotel loyalty landscape.

The inbound transfer access from both Amex MR and Citi TY is genuinely useful and underappreciated — it makes Choice Privileges one of the more accessible hotel programs for urban redemptions without a hotel co-brand card. But transfer in strategically, not speculatively.

Recent Changes

2024Choice Hotels completed acquisition of Radisson Hotels Americas, adding Radisson, Radisson Blu, Country Inn & Suites, and Park Inn by Radisson properties to the Choice portfolio in the US and Canada.
2023WoodSpring Suites (extended-stay brand) earn rate confirmed at 5 pts/$1, lower than the standard 10 pts/$1 at most other Choice brands.

Common Pitfalls

Point value averages only 0.6–0.8 cents per point — the program only makes sense for frequent Choice Hotel guests or as a strategic transfer target for specific properties
Transferring Amex MR or Citi TY points at 1:1 is rarely good value unless you have a specific Cambria or Ascend redemption in mind — those same points are worth more in airline or Hyatt transfers
WoodSpring Suites, Econo Lodge, Rodeway Inn, and Suburban Extended Stay earn only 5 pts/$1, half the standard rate — check the brand before assuming full earning
No outbound transfer partners — once you earn Choice Privileges points, they stay in Choice Privileges
Elite status requires genuine night volume (40 nights for Platinum, 60 for Diamond) with benefits that are modest compared to Hyatt or Hilton equivalents
Award availability can be inconsistent at Ascend Collection properties since those are independently operated; confirm redemption eligibility directly
